Supplements and Diabetes Medicine: What to Check Before You Mix Them

Quick answer

Supplements and diabetes medicine can interact. Chromium, L-arginine, ginseng and gymnema each have a source saying they may add to the effect of insulin or diabetes pills, so low blood sugar is possible. Glyco Harmony lists chromium and 22 blend names. Keep taking prescribed medicine and ask your pharmacist first.

The short answer01

Can you take supplements with diabetes medicine?

Sometimes, but only after your doctor or pharmacist says so. Herbal products can cause side effects with diabetes drugs, and some supplements cause low or high blood sugar (NCCIH, Diabetes and Dietary Supplements)(American Diabetes Association, Vitamins and Supplements).

The reason is simple. Your medicine is set to a dose. A supplement that also nudges blood sugar can push the total too far. In people with diabetes, medicine is the most common cause of low blood sugar (Mayo Clinic, Hypoglycemia).

Keep taking prescribed medicine. Never change insulin or diabetes medicine because of a supplement. Tell every provider about every supplement you take (NCCIH, Using Dietary Supplements Wisely).

Ingredient by ingredient02

Which Glyco Harmony ingredients may interact with diabetes medicine?

Four names on the label have a source linking them to blood sugar medicine: chromium, L-arginine, Panax ginseng and gymnema. Others carry cautions with different drugs.

The label gives the blend names but no single amounts, so we cannot say how much of any name you get. The cautions below come from the sources, not from a test of the drops.

Cautions from the sources, by ingredient
IngredientCaution
Chromium picolinate (0.7 mcg)May add to insulin and metformin effects; may lower levothyroxine absorption (NIH ODS, Chromium fact sheet)
L-arginineMay lower blood sugar, so doses of diabetes medicine may need adjusting; may drop blood pressure too low (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine)
Panax ginsengMight lower blood sugar; may interfere with blood clotting (NCCIH, Asian Ginseng)
GymnemaModest drops in fasting glucose in trials; rare liver injury (LiverTox, Gymnema)
Green tea extractCan lower blood levels of nadolol and atorvastatin (NCCIH, Green Tea)
Coleus forskohliiMay add to blood pressure drugs; bleeding risk with warfarin (MSK, Forskolin (Coleus forskohlii))
Licorice compoundCan raise blood pressure and lower potassium (NCCIH, Licorice Root)

Single-name pages explain more, for example chromium picolinate and glycyrrhizinate.

Check yourself03

Is a blood sugar supplement safe for you to try?

That depends on your medicines and your health. Five questions show whether to talk to your doctor first. Most people with diabetes medicine will need to.

1. Do you take insulin or any diabetes medicine?
2. Do you take a blood thinner, a blood-pressure medicine, an antidepressant, thyroid medicine or a statin?
3. Do you have liver or kidney disease, a heart rhythm problem, a seizure disorder or high blood pressure?
4. Are you pregnant or nursing, or under 18?
5. Are you having shaking, sweating, confusion, fainting, a seizure, trouble breathing or swelling of the face right now?

A safe order of steps04

How do you take blood sugar support safely?

Ask first, start only with a yes, and follow the label exactly. For Glyco Harmony, the label says to shake well and take 1 or 2 droppers full daily.

  1. Before you buy

Show your doctor or pharmacist the label and the 22 names. Mention insulin, pills, blood thinners and blood pressure medicine.

  2. The first day

If cleared, follow the label. It says not to exceed the recommended dose. It does not say how much a dropper holds.

  3. The weeks after

Keep your usual checks. Write down any shaking, sweating, dizziness or stomach upset, and report it.

  4. If anything is off

Stop and call your provider. Confusion, fainting or a seizure needs 911.

Full directions are on how to use Glyco Harmony. The label says pregnant or nursing mothers, children under 18 and anyone with a known medical condition should consult a physician.

A hidden risk05

Can a supplement contain hidden diabetes drugs?

It has happened. FDA lab tests found glyburide and metformin in a supplement sold for glucose support (FDA, Hidden drugs in SugarMD glucose supplement).

Glyburide can cause dangerously low blood sugar, and metformin can cause lactic acidosis. The risk is highest for people with chronic kidney disease. No source tested Glyco Harmony, and nothing says it contains a drug. That is why your prescriber should know about any such product.

If sugar drops06

What are the warning signs of low blood sugar from mixing medicine?

Shaking, sweating, hunger, a fast heartbeat and irritability are early signs. Confusion, slurred speech, fainting and seizures are severe signs (Mayo Clinic, Hypoglycemia).

Below 70 mg/dL is low, and below 54 mg/dL is severe (CDC, Low Blood Sugar (Hypoglycemia)). Follow the plan your care team gave you. The full list is on low blood sugar signs.

  1. Shaky, sweaty, hungry, fast heartbeatThese can be low blood sugar (under 70 mg/dL is low). If you have diabetes, follow your own plan.
  2. Confusion, slurred speech, faintingSevere low blood sugar. Someone with diabetes who has severe symptoms or loses consciousness needs emergency care.
  3. Yellow skin or eyes, dark urinePossible liver trouble. Stop the drops and call your doctor. Liver injury has been reported with green tea extract and gymnema.
  4. Irregular heartbeat or very high blood pressureLicorice compounds such as glycyrrhizin can cause these. Get medical care.
  5. Call 911 nowA seizure, loss of consciousness, trouble breathing, or swelling of the face or lips needs emergency care. Do not wait for a supplement.

Signs from (CDC, Low Blood Sugar (Hypoglycemia)) (Mayo Clinic, Hypoglycemia) (LiverTox, Green Tea) (NCCIH, Licorice Root). This list is not complete, and a supplement is never a reason to wait.

FAQ07

Supplement and medicine questions

Can I take supplements with metformin?

Ask your doctor or pharmacist first. Chromium may add to the effects of insulin and metformin, and herbal products can cause side effects with diabetes drugs. Do not change your metformin dose because of a supplement.

Can a supplement cause low blood sugar?

Yes, some can, especially with diabetes medicine. Chromium, L-arginine and ginseng each have a source saying they may lower blood sugar. Know the warning signs and follow your care team's plan.

Do I need to tell my doctor about supplements?

Yes. Tell every provider about every supplement, including drops. Supplements can interact with prescription and over-the-counter drugs. Bring the bottle and the Supplement Facts panel to your visit.

What should I do if I take insulin and want to try Glyco Harmony?

Talk to your doctor before you start. Insulin and several of the label's names may both affect blood sugar. Never change an insulin dose because of a supplement.

Can green tea extract interact with my medicines?

It can lower blood levels of nadolol and atorvastatin, and an NCCIH-funded study found an interaction with raloxifene. Green tea extract has also caused rare liver injury. Check with your pharmacist.

How do I take blood sugar support drops?

Follow the label: shake well, then take 1 or 2 droppers full daily and swallow. Do not exceed the recommended dose. The label gives no time of day and does not define a dropper.
